About

At Romeu Shipping Division, our mission goes beyond logistics. We are an extension of Romeu’s tradition and values, with over 150 years of experience in the industry. Every project, every relationship and every decision is the result of a combination of ‘head and heart’. We bring not only our deep knowledge and experience, but also a genuine commitment to our clients, looking after their interests as if they were our own.

We are a family. Not just because of the family character of the group but because family reflects our deep connection to our commitment to sustainability, society and ethics. This is not simply a business strategy, it is a responsibility we feel as a family.

At Romeu Shipping Division, Data, Sustainability and Talent converge as the three strategic pillars that guide our operations. We use a data-driven approach to make accurate decisions and tailor our proposals to customer needs, while our unwavering dedication to sustainability reflects our commitment to minimising environmental impact and generating value for society. These pillars, reinforced by the talent and commitment of our team, position us as an industry leader, bringing together precision, accountability and human excellence in everything we do.

Pillar data

At Romeu, we strongly believe that data is a cornerstone to drive our business towards a promising and sustainable future. But why are we so sure? Let us explain

Informed decisions: By focusing on data, we improve our ability to make decisions at all levels of the organisation. A robust set of reliable and relevant data ensures that our decisions are made as informed as possible, increasing the chances of achieving superior results.

High efficiency: By adopting a data-driven approach, we are in a unique position to thoroughly analyse and understand our operations and processes. This introspection leads to optimisation, increasing efficiency at every step.

Deep Customer Insights: By analysing data related to our customers’ behaviour, we can refine and adapt our value proposition, and even move forward thanks to solutions based on advanced analytics, ensuring that we are always meeting their needs and expectations.

For Romeu, being a data-driven organisation is not just about using a bunch of numbers; it is a vision for the future, a tool for growth and, most importantly, a promise to always deliver the best to our customers and partners.

ESG pillar

ESG at Romeu: Sustainability and Value Commitment

Sustainability is not a buzzword for Romeu; it is a core mission that drives our vision for the future. Under the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) approach, Romeu is actively engaged in promoting sustainable and ethical practices in all our operations and business relationships.

Environmental: At Romeu, we are fully committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations. We accompany our business units in the transition towards the decarbonisation of the supply chain, always focused on supporting our customers during this critical change. We are working towards our goal of minimising our environmental impact, ensuring that our operations are conducted as sustainably as possible.

Social: Social respect, diversity and local traditions are deeply rooted in Romeu’s philosophy. We are committed to actively promoting equality in all our activities. We recognise the richness that diversity brings and strive to be respectful and inclusive at every step.

Governance: At Romeu, ethics and compliance are non-negotiable. We are committed to developing a strong ethical culture, where everyone at Romeu works to the highest standards of integrity and transparency.

Finally, we cannot fail to mention the commitment of our teams. Our “Volunteers be Green” are testament to our commitment to sustainability, demonstrating daily our promise to create value for all our stakeholders and minimise our impact on the planet.

Romeu, more than a group, is an active change agent towards a more sustainable and equitable world.

Talent pillar

Talent enables us to navigate uncertain environments and turbulent times while keeping a critical eye on the future and keeping our feet on the ground. Increasing talent density is a necessity to stay ahead of the curve.

Talent has four objectives: to attract and retain the value the business needs, to help its leaders create competitive advantage, to enable the growth of the global operation and to strengthen the brand. This means cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit in every member of our team by encouraging them not just to do a good job, but to challenge the status quo, to abandon comfort, and to launch challenging initiatives and not rest until they become a reality

The Talent area’s projects are articulated along three axes: leadership, cultural transformation, and diversity. All three pursue commitment to people by providing them with appropriate development opportunities within the organisation.

Our Talent represents the balance between a legacy of more than 150 years and a recent history of open-mindedness and determination that knows that our values and passion attract and connect. For all these reasons, Talent is strategic for Romeu.

Our history

Romeu’s origins date back to 1869 in Tarragona, specifically to the company Viuda y Sobrinos de P. Ferrer Mary. This company was owned by Matilde Ferrer and her nephew Juan Escandell, whose brother-in-law, Ernesto Romeu Giralt, joined the company shortly afterwards.

In 1917 Ernesto Romeu Giralt, considered to be the founder of Romeu and the only member of the first generation, died. His shares passed into the hands of his wife, who also died shortly afterwards, so their first-born son, Manuel Romeu Escandell, took over the family business under the name Romeu Compañía in 1939, just after the Spanish Civil War.

Under the leadership of the second generation, the two brothers Manuel and Ernesto, the foundations of what Romeu is today were laid. In the 1950s Romeu Cia expanded first to Valencia and then to Barcelona, offices that were managed by members of the third generation.

Romeu really reached world stature under the management of the third generation, with Juan and Ernesto Romeu Sanromá at the head and the three Romeu Loperena brothers, Ernesto, Jose María and Quico afterwards. With their vision and hard work, Romeu opened new activities such as customs agency, transits, tugboat service, stevedoring and others.

The 1980s saw Romeu’s expansion throughout Spain, covering most of the major ports and cities: Barcelona, Tarragona, Valencia, Alicante, Madrid, Cartagena, Seville, Algeciras, Cadiz, Vigo, Bilbao, Las Palmas and Tenerife.

In the 1990s came the phase of international expansion, starting in Portugal, continuing in Tunisia and Algeria and shortly afterwards making the leap to Mexico and Hong Kong. This growth would be reinforced with the turn of the century and thanks to the support of the fourth generation (Luis Romeu, Ernesto Romeu, Javier Romeu and José Romeu) as well as the fifth (Miriam Fábregas). Different Romeu companies gradually expanded their geographical coverage, and today they are present all over the world with their own offices in 24 countries on 4 continents.
